AFBI is pleased to report that Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) has called for extending all of the expiring Bush tax relief measures. This includes repealing the estate tax.
Senator Bayh’s comments are particularly interesting as he made them in the context of job-creation and economic recovery. Responding to remarks by Republic House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, Bayh said:
“We don’t need to raise taxes now, Eric is exactly right.”
“We should, over the next three weeks, focus squarely on small businesses and…make sure we’re not going to raise taxes this year, the way the Administration continues to talk…”
Senator Bayh voted against the Bush tax relief (including estate tax reform and temporary repeal) when it passed in 2001. When Congress took up legislation in 2002 to permanently repeal the estate tax, Senator Bayh decided to vote yes. When that legislation came up again in 2006, Senator Bayh voted no.
We are happy to see that Senator Bayh is back on the side of death tax repeal. We hope that Senator Bayh’s Democrat colleagues follow his example and support permanent estate tax repeal.
The Death Tax fight will soon be decided in the halls of Congress by your representatives. AFBI is leading the fight for repeal in Washington, but we cannot do it alone.
