Rep. Frey says estate tax drives people
away
State Rep. John Frey of Ridgefield said this week an estate
tax study proves Connecticut residents are fleeing the state
to tax-friendly states to avoid the punitive tax policies
of Connecticut.
“I strongly urge the state to repeal the estate tax
this legislative session,” said Rep. Frey, a member
of the legislature’s, tax writing Finance, Revenue and
Bonding Committee. Rep. Frey said he is introducing a bill
this year to repeal the “unjust tax.”

State to Study Failed Tax Ideas
The handful of tax policies left on the cutting room floor
during budget negotiations will be studied again later this
summer.
The 2008-09 budget package approved last week by the General
Assembly did not cap property taxes or phase out the inheritance
tax, measures supported by Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell. And
the Democratic majority lost its fight to establish an earned-income
tax credit for the working poor and to begin collecting taxes
on Internet sales.

Democrats Thwart Efforts to Repeal Connecticut’s
Unfair Death Tax
Despite a current state surplus of $917 million and prospects
for a continued healthy revenue stream, taxpayers will see
virtually no relief this year under terms of the tentative
budget deal reached this week.
In fact, the only major tax proposal in a tentative agreement
reached Monday night between Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell
and legislators is a 33 percent increase in the state's cigarette
tax to $2 per pack, up from $1.51.

State representatives have been busy debating various issues
Here at the Indiana Statehouse, I have been spending a great
deal of time studying legislation in committee meetings, debating
bills on the House floor, and voting on the proposals.
Many of the bills we are debating have both negative and
positive attributes, and we must sort through each one. While
I am studying these issues, I encourage you to contact me
and let me know how you feel. After all, these are issues
that will affect you in the future and your voices should
be heard.

Bill Would Help Beginning Farmers
DES MOINES -- Rep. Pat Grassley is a beginning farmer who
says too many of his friends have a tough time getting established
in farming.
Grassley, 23, a New Hartford Republican, joined with two
other House Republicans Tuesday to propose a package of programs
and tax breaks to help beginning farmers. "I know the
difficulties that we face as young farmers getting started,"
said Grassley, who works on a family farm that includes his

Democrats Defeat Attempt by Republicans
to Repeal Death Tax in Nebraska
Senator Tom White issued the following statement after his
plan to give every Nebraska homeowner a $500 property tax
cut and eliminate the estate tax was defeated by the Legislature:
“Today’s vote would have strengthened Nebraska’s
middle class by giving every homeowner a $500 property tax
cut and would have eliminated the estate tax, but unfortunately
too many have not heard the people’s demand for real
property tax relief. I made a promise to the people of my
district that I would fight hard for property tax relief,
and despite this defeat I will continue that fight.”
