Senator Tom White issued the following statement after his
plan to give every Nebraska homeowner a $500 property tax
cut and eliminate the estate tax was defeated by the Legislature:
“Today’s vote would have strengthened Nebraska’s
middle class by giving every homeowner a $500 property tax
cut and would have eliminated the estate tax, but unfortunately
too many have not heard the people’s demand for real
property tax relief. I made a promise to the people of my
district that I would fight hard for property tax relief,
and despite this defeat I will continue that fight.”
Yesterday, Senator White released the results of a poll on
tax issues conducted March 29-April 3, 2007 by Myers Research/Strategic
Services of Springfield, Virginia with a sample size of 500
voters from across Nebraska. Highlights from the poll:
• 84% of Nebraskans favor Senator White’s $500
property tax cut plan.
• 69% of Nebraskans favor eliminating the estate tax.
• Only 49% of Nebraskans favor income tax cuts and 43%
oppose.
• When asked to choose between a $500 property tax cut
and an income tax cut, Nebraskans favor the property tax cut
62%-20%.
