Senator Max Baucus Says Congress Will Likely Decide Death Tax Next Month

Baucus: Lewistown's airport could get aid from federal program

An area farmer who attended the meeting told Baucus that his father recently passed away and he was confused about the state of the estate tax.

Baucus said that issue will likely be decided by Congress next month.

In 2010, the estate tax is zero percent, but it is scheduled to shoot up to a high rate next year.

"Clearly, we have to act," Baucus said. "September is going to be a big month for determining tax policy."

Lawmakers returning from the break also must figure out what to do about the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts that expire this year, Baucus said.
