NEW STUDY: HIRING, PAYROLL AND THE RETURN OF THE ESTATE TAX
Texas Rancher Forced to Split Family Ranch,
Work Two Jobs to Pay Estate Tax Bill
Green Technology Business and California Farm Face Closing Due to Estate Tax
WASHINGTON, DC—Unless Congress acts this year, the federal estate tax will return next year at a rate of 55 percent on estates over $1 million.
The American Family Business Foundation (AFBF) will host a luncheon briefing on September 16, 2010, to discuss what the return of the estate tax will mean for family business owners, workers, wages, and Americans needing jobs.
At the briefing, AFBF will release its new study analyzing the impact on hiring, payroll, and capital outlays of raising the estate tax from zero to as high as 65 percent, as Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed. The findings will be presented by American Action Forum President and former Director of the Congressional Budget Office, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who authored the report for AFBF.
Texas rancher Clayton Leverett , green-technology “GDiesel” developer Peter Gunnerman, and California rancher Jeff Page will add perspective to the proceedings by discussing the effect of the tax on their families and businesses.
Leverett was forced to put significant portions of his family’s ranch up for sale and take a second job in construction to pay the bill the IRS handed him after his father’s sudden death.
Gunnerman, who owns a clean energy technology company with his 82-year old father, may be forced to close the family business and let go of 33 employees should the estate tax soar to 55 percent.
The estate tax forced Page’s grandmother to lease and then sell all their pastureland to pay off the estate tax. That was 1972. His family scraped by to survive the tax again in 2000. Now he faces a third generation estate tax.
The luncheon is complimentary. RSVPs are required.
