Responses to Robert Rubin and Julian Robertson's op-ed

...If I go to Las Vegas and blow it all on gambling, women and booze, the government will leave me alone. But if I decide to give it to my children, the government wants 45% off the top. Apparently this makes complete sense to Messrs. Rubin and Robertson...

Carroll: A less greedy estate tax

Denver Post
We've all known a spoiled heir or two whose sense of entitlement might have benefited from having had to work for a living. But for every such eternal brat, there are others, equally blessed at birth, who contribute as much as they do to society precisely because they were born free from material want and able to pursue dreams that otherwise would have been extremely hard to fulfill.

Congress is likely to finish work this year on setting a permanent estate tax, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) suggested Thursday.

Grassley, the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, suggested that Congress is likely to settle on an estate tax rate this year, and exempt up to $3.5 million of estates from taxation.

The forgotten tax that haunts family-owned business

With all the focus on eliminating the Bush tax cuts and spurring the economy, President Obama and Congressional Democrats are tripping over themselves touting their small business tax breaks this election season. What they’re not mentioning is an automatic tax increase that will hit family-owned businesses hard, starting on New Year’s Day.

Save-the-Date: Educational Briefing on Estate Tax Policy, September 16, 2010

The American Family Business Foundation (AFBF) will host a luncheon briefing on September 16, 2010, to discuss what the return of the estate tax will mean for family business owners, workers, wages, and Americans needing jobs.

At the briefing, AFBF will release its new study analyzing the impact on hiring, payroll, and capital outlays of raising the estate tax from zero to as high as 65 percent, as Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed.  The findings will be presented by American Action Forum President and former Director of the Congressional Budget Office, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who authored the report for AFBF.

Farmers fear return of estate tax

Toll hits asset-rich, cash-poor farms especially hard

Bill and Carol Chandler have long dreamed of passing down the family's Selma farm to their two sons.

But with a rollback of federal estate taxes set to expire in January, they might have to rethink those plans.

Unless Congress intervenes, their kids would face a tax of up to 55% of the value of the estate, up from 0% this year.

Death tax games: Playing with farmers' lives

Call it a tribute to farmers' resilience and business sense. Or maybe it's just that farmers tend to keep their mouths shut about their personal business. Either way, annoying background noise muffles the voices of farmers who oppose the death tax or have been harmed by it.

“Responsible Estate Tax Act” is Irresponsible

Congress Should Focus on Repeal, not Reinstatement
