The American Family Business Institute (AFBI) is the 501(c)(6) trade association of family business-owners and farmers who led the fight for the 2010 death tax repeal. AFBI continues to lead the fight for permanent repeal.
Who We Are
The American Family Business Institute (AFBI) represents family business owners, large and small, throughout America. Our mission is the permanent repeal of the death tax, the federal estate tax. We focus 100% of our energy, leadership and resources on moving America towards this goal. AFBI was founded in 1994. It was the one of the first organizations to call for permanent repeal of the estate tax. Today, it remains the coalition leader in Washington, DC of organizations fighting for estate tax repeal.
What We Do
AFBI educates Congress and the American public on the social and economic costs of the estate tax. AFBI helps business owners and citizens to lobby their elected officials for estate tax repeal. We work closely with the leadership of the U. S. Senate and the House of Representatives and their respective tax committees, we gather co-sponsors for repeal legislation, and we strategically lobby targeted Congressional offices. We recognize Members of Congress who have supported estate tax repeal and educate voters about the estate tax voting records of their Senators and Representatives.
The Next Battle
The estate tax was temporarily raised from repeal in 2010 to the rate of 35 percent and an exemption of $5 million. On January 1, 2013 the tax will climb even higher to the rate of 55% at an exemption of only $1 million (see “Current Fight”). A majority of the House of Representatives and a near-majority of the Senate are on record in support of permanent death tax repeal, as are sixty-seven percent of the American people. The issue cuts across all racial, economic, and partisan lines. With your help, we will convince Congress to end the unjust death tax.
The Death Tax fight will soon be decided in the halls of Congress by your representatives. AFBI is leading the fight for repeal in Washington, but we cannot do it alone.
