SNP defends low income tax proposals

Council tax and inheritance tax are the two taxes disliked the most by people in the UK

April 13, 2007

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has defended its proposals for the introduction of a local income tax to replace the current council tax system.

The party's deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme that such an income-related tax would be "fairer".

"The council tax has gone up by 60 per cent in the last ten years. It penalises people who can least afford to pay it; pensioners and middle income families are particularly hard hit," she remarked.

Ms Sturgeon stated that if implemented, the tax rate would be set at 3p for every £1 of income and would help to reduce the local tax "burden" for people who have difficulty paying council tax.

A recent report by The Motley Fool found that council tax and inheritance tax are the two taxes disliked the most by people in the UK.
